First-placed Real Madrid and Girona, in second place, both secured victories on Wednesday with late goals, keeping them tied for first place in La Liga.

Real defeated Mallorca 1-0 at home, with Antonio Rudiger scoring the lone goal in the 78th minute with a header.

After the visitors hit the woodwork twice through Antonio Sanchez and Samu Costa, Carlo Ancelotti’s team pulled off a scare. Brahim Diaz appeared set to score, but he headed against the post before Rudiger demonstrated better precision.

Girona then maintained their momentum as they overcame Atletico Madrid 4-3 at home, won by Ivan Martin’s stoppage-time goal.

Alvaro Morata had cancelled off Valery’s opening goal for the home team, but an exciting first half saw them add further goals through Savio and Daley Blind.

Martin then had the last say, with a finish into the top corner a minute into added time at the end. Morata had previously made it 3-2 in the 44th minute and completed his hat-trick to tie the score nine minutes into the second half.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico currently trails third place by ten points, while Michel’s team moves up to 48 points, level with Real.

Additionally, Celta Vigo overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat Real Betis at home thanks to a last-minute goal from Williot Swedberg.

This was Celta’s first victory under Alexander Medina, as they beat second-bottom Granada 2-0 to move out of the relegation zone.

The difference between them narrowed to one point after goals from Myrto Uzuni and Bryan Zaragoza for the hosts and a dismissal for the visitors’ Ruben Sobrino.
