Joint-favorites Morocco remained undefeated as they advanced to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations. They secured a victory against Zambia with a single goal from Hakim Ziyech.
Morocco started the game strongly, but they struggled to convert their chances until the 38th minute. Captain Ziyech seized the opportunity and scored after the ball rebounded off the goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Atlas Lions continued to dominate the game, although they were less effective in the attacking third after their captain was substituted at halftime. Towards the end of the match, they came close to extending their lead, but Zambian goalkeeper Tresford Lawrence Mulenga made two outstanding saves to deny them.
Former Chelsea player Ziyech was extremely active on the field, constantly creating opportunities for his team and scoring the winning goal as Morocco advanced to the knockout stage without a loss. However, there is a slight concern for the Atlas Lions, as Ziyech had to be substituted at halftime due to an ankle injury, which he was seen treating with an ice pack.
Leicester City forward Patson Daka had a disappointing performance for the Zambians, as he was unable to capitalize on the limited chances created by his team. In a crucial match where the Copper Bullets needed to score in order to have a chance of progressing to the next round, Daka, an experienced forward, was unable to make a significant impact.
Zambia has been eliminated from the tournament after coming in third place in their group with only two points. On January 30, Walid Regragui’s team will face South Africa in the round of 16.
