Manchester United lost both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw to injury In the first half of their pivotal Champions League matchup with Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

Shaw suffered a hamstring strain in the final seconds of the first half of the game; Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaced him at halftime. Maguire also pulled up with a groyne issue in the first half of the game and was replaced in defence by Jonny Evans.

Maguire and Shaw are the latest additions to a long list of injured United players, which also includes winger Amad Diallo, midfielders Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Mason Mount, and defenders Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and Tyrell Malacia.

Due to illness, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were unable to play against Bayern; Jadon Sancho is still not playing for Erik ten Hag; and Bruno Fernandes, the team captain, will serve a suspension for Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

The total number of United absentees for a match they lost 7-0 the previous season would reach 13 if all the other injured players followed the Portuguese in missing the match.

After pulling up with a groyne injury close to the touchline, Maguire initially attempted to continue against Bayern Munich. However, he looked quite distressed and was quickly replaced by Evans, who entered to partner Raphael Varane at the back.

At halftime, Shaw made a substitution, moving Diogo Dalot to the left and Wan-Bissaka to right-back. Kingsley Coman’s winner at Old Trafford condemned United to play no European football for the rest of the season, as they lost 1-0.

Erik ten Hag, the manager of United, responded, “I can’t say at this moment [how serious the injuries are]. Obviously,  we have to wait another 24 hours,” when questioned about the injuries following the game. You’ll have to wait for the results of our evaluation and diagnosis.”
