Gunmen have killed General Segun Aremu-Cole (rtd), traditional ruler, causing anger in the Ekiti local government of Kwara State.

According to sources, a group of heavily armed men entered the palace of the Olukoro of Koro and started shooting indiscriminately on Thursday night.

In addition to this, the gunmen also kidnapped the monarch’s wife and two others. Koro is a town located on the border between Ekiti and another area where gunmen have recently killed two monarchs and abducted schoolchildren.

The spokesperson for the Kwara State Police command, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident in a statement released early on Friday morning.

“Immediate and intensive investigations are underway to apprehend those criminals for this reprehensible act,” she said.

“We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly.

“Security measures in the koro community have been intensified, tactical teams are being mobilised to beef up security to ensure the safety and well-being of residents”.

Toun also mentioned that the Police commissioner, Victor Olaiya, has encouraged the public to stay calm, watchful, and cooperative as security forces begin their investigation into the attack.

In the meantime, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has condemned the incident as irresponsible, shocking, and disgraceful.

AbdulRazaq has urged the security agencies to use all available resources to apprehend the culprits, release the kidnapped individuals, including the spouse, and ensure that they face the consequences of their actions.

The governor concluded in a statement, saying, “We will certainly get the perpetrators and ensure that this is their last crime against humanity.”

“My profound condolences go to the people of Koro. Our hearts are broken, and we stand by them at this time and always.”
