Phil Foden scored three goals in a fantastic performance as Manchester City won 4-1 against Aston Villa at Etihad Stadium.
The victory puts City just one point behind the top of the Premier League table. The reigning champions took the lead early in the game when Rodri scored from Jeremy Doku’s pass.
Despite missing key players like Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, and John McGinn, a weakened Villa team equalized through Jhon Duran’s goal nine minutes later after a nice combination with Morgan Rogers.
At the end of the first half, the visitors seemed to be tied, but they fell behind just before halftime when a wall collapsed, allowing Foden’s free kick to score easily against Robin Olsen.
Foden then scored again just after the hour mark, bringing his total for the season to 20 goals in all competitions. He completed his hat-trick with a long-range shot that went into the top corner with 20 minutes left in the game.
This result keeps City in third place, just one point behind the new leaders, Arsenal, who defeated Luton Town.
Pep Guardiola‘s team is currently behind Liverpool in second place on goal difference, but Liverpool could move back to the top of the table if they win against Sheffield United on Thursday night.
Aston Villa remains in fourth place, but Tottenham, in fifth place, could overtake them if they win their postponed match.
City will face Crystal Palace next Saturday, while Villa will host Brentford later that afternoon.
