A Federal High Court in Abuja has set March 19, 2024, as the date to decide on Nnamdi Kanu’s new bail request.
The trial will resume on March 20.
During the court session on February 26, 2024, Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, requested bail for his client, citing health reasons.
He also mentioned that Kanu’s prolonged detention could impact his ability to defend himself in court.
The trial of Kanu resumed on Monday after being suspended by the Court of Appeal, which had previously acquitted and discharged him in October 2022.
The Court of Appeal also ruled that Kanu’s extradition from Kenya to Nigeria was illegal and quashed all terrorism charges against him by the Federal Government.
However, the federal government appealed this decision to the Supreme Court.
On December 15, 2023, the Supreme Court ordered that Kanu’s trial on terrorism charges should continue.
The court stated that there is no law in the country that prevents a trial from proceeding even if a suspect’s rights were violated.
Since June 2021, Kanu has been in detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) after being brought back to Nigeria from Kenya.
