The main opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has chosen a former education minister as the running mate for their presidential candidate, John Mahama, in the upcoming December elections.
Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, 72, served as Ghana’s education minister from 2013 to 2017 and was also the first female vice-chancellor of a public university in the country.
The NDC described Prof Opoku-Agyemang as a trailblazer for women in leadership in Ghana, highlighting their commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and empowering women in leadership roles.
In the 2020 presidential elections, Prof Opoku-Agyemang ran alongside Mr. Mahama, a former president, but they were unsuccessful in stopping current President Nana Akufo-Addo’s re-election bid.
Her selection in 2020 was historic as it marked the first time a major political party in Ghana had chosen a female vice-presidential candidate. If elected, she will become Ghana’s first female vice-president.
