History: ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ Becomes Nollywood Highest Grossing Film

Published:

Funke Akindele achieved the remarkable feat of breaking the Box Office record and securing the title of Nollywood’s highest-grossing movie in just three weeks, with her film titled ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ amassing over ₦854 million.

Akindele made the announcement on X (formerly twitter).

This substantial ₦854 million gross is a testament to Akindele’s extensive career, catering to the evolving cinematic preferences of the Nigerian audience.

Funke Akindele has gained a reputation for producing financially successful films, including the recent Battle on Buka Street, which earned over ₦668 million, and Omo Ghetto: The Saga, grossing over ₦636 million.

More recently, particularly with A Tribe Called Judah, Akindele has shifted her focus to stories addressing the ethnic divisions in the country.

The thematic shift aligns with the heightened public consciousness on this topic in 2023, a politically charged election year.

Akindele entered the political arena during this time, campaigning for the position of deputy governor of Lagos.

A Tribe Called Judah explores the lives of five brothers sharing the same mother but having fathers from different ethnic backgrounds.

The narrative revolves around their plan to rob a small mall with their mother’s assistance, only to encounter armed robbers upon their arrival.
