Spurs are thought to have agreed on the terms of a deal in August, but Chelsea withdrew.
Gallagher, 23, was left unreplaced by the Blues despite new manager Mauricio Pochettino‘s admiration for his performances in the first month of the season.
With the exception of the 2-1 loss to Manchester United because of suspension, the England international has started every Premier League game this season. In addition, he has led the team ten times when Ben Chilwell and Reece James were sidelined due to injuries.
Gallagher could still be sold by Chelsea in January, though. This is due to the fact that the midfield player’s contract is about to expire and a new one has not yet been agreed upon by the two sides.
Tottenham may choose to make a move in January after learning about Gallagher’s circumstances, according to a report from Sky Sports News. The U17 World Cup winner’s asking price from Chelsea is unknown, but they won’t give him away for peanuts to a direct competitor.
Gallagher’s chances of signing with Tottenham could be influenced by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s circumstances. Though there are rumoured to be many suitors, the Denmark international will need to leave Spurs to make room for Gallagher. The team most likely to sign him is Juventus.
Chelsea would find it difficult to lose a player of Gallagher’s calibre so young. He has 15 years of club experience and 65 first-team games under his belt. After having successful loan stints at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom, and Crystal Palace, Gallagher made his debut for the team. Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, has captained the player eleven times in his career.
However, given their lack of depth, Tottenham’s top priority in January is to sign a centre-back. Davinson Sanchez has not yet been replaced after moving to Galatasaray in the summer, and Micky van de Ven is expected to return next month despite suffering a hamstring injury.
Eric Dier has only played in two games this season, suggesting that Ange Postecoglou is not a big fan of the centre back. Those two appearances were unsuccessful. Playing full-backs Emerson Royal and Ben Davies down the middle is a tactic Postecoglou has frequently used.
Their top January target is reportedly Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, a 23-year-old who can be had for about £35 million. Jarrad Branthwaite has also been discussed, but Everton does not want to lose the 21-year-old. His rating is £100 million.
“We let Davinson Sanchez go after the window closed,” Postecoglou said to Sky Sports. We were aware that we were somewhat taking a chance when we didn’t get the extra center-back we were hoping for, but that was okay in the first half of the season.
“But we didn’t have another center-back after we lost Micky, and Eric Dier also had some problems, so we really need to find the right one. It’s important to get the right person in, which should happen, rather than just bringing another body in.
