16 Soldiers To Stand Trial As Army Launches Court Martial In Plateau

The Nigerian Army has announced that 16 soldiers and an officer will be put on trial for their suspected roles in murder and illegal arms dealing.

Mansur Mairuwa, the acting deputy director of legal services for the 3rd division, made this announcement on Wednesday during the opening of a court martial in Jos, the capital of Plateau.

The court is located at Rhino Officers Mess, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, in Jos. Mairuwa emphasized that the court is essential for maintaining accountability and adherence to the military justice system.

“An officer and 16 soldiers will face trial in the general court marshal for offences related to murder, arms dealing and other serious charges,” he said.

“This action underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability among its personnel in compliance with international best practice and rule of law.”

Laifis Bello, president of the general court marshal, also emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline, regimentation, and professionalism in the army.

Bello who read the convening order of the court, said “all proceedings of the court will be guided by the principles of natural justice, equity and fairness”.
