Former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, has accused some of his colleagues of treason just days after losing the Senate presidency to Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Former Akwa-Ibom State Governor and lawmaker for Akwa Ibom North-West, Akpabio, was the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

On Tuesday, he was elected President of the Tenth Senate with 63 votes. Yari, a member of the ruling party, received 46 votes.

During an interview on Thursday in Abuja, Yari said that as of 3 a.m. on Tuesday, his permutations showed that he would receive at least 61 of the 109 votes available, which would have been enough to see him glide to victory. Despite feeling misled by the outcome of events, the former governor of Zamfara believed that only God knew what had happened.

“Yes, I can say there was a betrayal. That’s the truth because as we are taking stock as of 3 am, Monday-Tuesday election, we took stock of over 76. But as usual, human beings, we thought we are going to get a pullout of about 15, which we will have a comfortable 61 to win the election,” he stated.

“But it’s become the reverse which only God knows what happened. So, I feel betrayed, but life continues and it’s a cycle.”

In addition to Akpabio, Senator Jibrin Barau of Kano North Senatorial District was elected unopposed as Senate Deputy President, succeeding Ovie Omo-Agege.

Tajudeen Abbas, a member of the House of Representatives from Zaria Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, was elected Speaker of the Green Chamber, while Benjamin Kalu, a member from Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State, was appointed Deputy Speaker.
