According to President Bola Tinubu, a lack of cooperation between Nigeria and the Benin Republic has hampered mutual progress.

The Nigerian president stated this when he met with Benin Republic President Patrice Talon at the Aso Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

“We are one. No other nation like ours should be worried. What is affecting us is a lack of synergy. We have not developed the necessary economic synergy that will develop our two nations,” Tinubu said, according to a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale.

“We must have common economic principles and priorities. The economic programme you are developing through inter-ministerial collaboration is welcomed by me.”

The Nigerian president informed his Benin Republic counterpart that “we are all in this together.” Tinubu stated that the Federal Government will assist all private sector interests in order to help both countries develop.

President Talon, who was in the State House to seek President Tinubu’s assistance for improving economic relations ahead of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Summit, termed his country’s relationship with Nigeria as critical.

He stated that the Benin Republic is looking to strengthen its commercial links with Nigeria, emphasising the free movement of people and products between the two nations.
