The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) expressed regret for supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, indicating a change in political strategy for future elections.

NEF spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman shared this sentiment in an interview with the Guardian, showing a thoughtful approach to the region’s voting decisions.

President Tinubu, who ran with the All Progressives Congress (APC), received significant support from the northern region, surpassing his competitors.

However, NEF now criticizes this choice, with Suleiman stressing the importance of a more unified and consensus-based method for selecting presidential candidates.

NEF’s reflection coincides with the presence of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his interactions in the north. Obi’s recent visits and charitable actions in northern communities have been noted, sparking conversations about the qualities sought in national leaders.

Suleiman highlighted that the northern voters prefer a candidate who is seen as inclusive, less controversial, and with a broader national appeal.

He said, “The North made a mistake in voting Bola Tinubu to the presidency in 2023, and it is unlikely that they will repeat the same error in the future.

“They have learned from their past misstep and will strive to select a candidate who can unite the country and govern in the best interests of all Nigerians.

“Moving forward, the North will be more cautious in selecting a candidate for the presidency. They will prioritize someone who is seen as more inclusive, less controversial, and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country.

“The mistake of supporting Tinubu in 2023 has taught them the importance of unity and consensus in selecting a candidate for the highest office in the land.”
