Edwin van der Sar, who suffered a brain hemorrhage, is not in a life-threatening situation and can interact with his family.
The former Manchester United, Ajax, and Netherlands goalkeeper had a brain haemorrhage in Croatia last week and was airlifted to hospital on Friday afternoon.
The Dutchman is still in the intensive care unit, but his wife, Annemarie, says he is in stable health.
“Edwin is still in the intensive care unit, but is stable,” she said in a message relayed by Ajax. He is not in life-threatening danger. Every time we get to visit him, he’s communicative. We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop.”
Van der Sar played for Ajax for nine years before moving for Juventus in 1999. He later played for Fulham and Manchester United.
He concluded his career with two Champions League titles, four Premier League titles, and four Eredivisie titles.
Van der Sar, 52, returned to the Dutch capital in 2012 as Ajax’s marketing director and was promoted to CEO four years later, but quit at the end of May.
Following the news of Van der Sar’s hemorrhage on Friday, both Ajax and United expressed their support.
“Manchester United is holding Edwin van der Sar and his family in our collective thoughts after hearing the news that the legendary goalkeeper has fallen seriously ill,” the Premier League side said.
