Qatar and the UAE agreed to restore diplomatic ties on Monday, according to a tweet from Qatar’s foreign ministry. Embassies and consulates were scheduled to reopen on June 19.
Qatar’s embassies in Abu Dhabi and consulate in Dubai will reopen. The United Arab Emirates will reopen its embassy in Doha.
The restoration of ties “represents the will of both countries’ leaders to strengthen joint Arab collaboration and achieve the aspirations of both peoples,” the ministry said in a statement.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, UAE’s foreign minister, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Qatar’s prime minister, congratulated each other on the return of embassies.
According to a statement on Emirates News Agency (WAM), both officials lauded the restoration of connections as announcing a “new stage of cooperation and partnership” that confirms the deeply entrenched linkages that unite both countries. They also talked about methods to improve cooperation.
In January 2021, four countries, including the UAE, withdrew their boycott of Qatar.
After a Saudi-led pact to resolve the rivalry, Saudi Arabia and Egypt were the first to reappoint ambassadors to Doha in 2021, whereas Bahrain has yet to restore its embassy in Doha.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan visited Qatar for the first time since the World Cup boycott on December 5, 2022.
