President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to leave Abuja on Wednesday for Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to attend the COP28 Climate Summit. The summit is also known as the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28).
During the World Leaders’ Summit on December 1 and 2, 2023, with the theme “Unite, Act, and Deliver,” President Tinubu will deliver a national statement. This statement will focus on Nigeria’s position on various issues related to renewable energy and climate financing.
Considering the significant impact of climate change on Nigeria, such as desertification, flooding, erosion, drought, and national security risks, President Tinubu will use this platform to advocate for increased financial and technical support for developing nations.
Tinubu plans to remind developed countries of their commitment to provide $100 billion each year to support local initiatives that tackle climate change challenges.
The President’s message will also emphasize the importance of holding businesses and institutions responsible, reflecting Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable and responsible practices.
The Nigerian delegation at COP28 will actively seek to establish new and stronger partnerships to implement Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation.
During his time in Dubai, President Tinubu will actively take part in important side events. These events will help him fulfill his promise to attract foreign direct investment and increase wealth and revenue in Nigeria.
The President will also attend other events organized by the Nigerian delegation. Senior government officials will accompany him. After the summit ends, President Tinubu will return to Abuja, as stated by Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media & Publicity.
