Garba Shehu, a former presidential communications advisor, has denied media claims that his boss, Muhammadu Buhari, urged President Bola Tinubu not to examine appointees from the previous administration.
President Tinubu recently met with his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, in London.
The media was abuzz with rumors that Buhari had asked President Tinubu to put a stop to future investigations of politically exposed individuals by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
However, in a statement issued on Thursday, Shehu denied rumors that the former president did not make such a request, labeling the stories as false.
“It is fake, let us not discuss it or give it energy or air of publicity. This is fake news, and nothing more,” Shehu announced. “Thankfully, there was no one other than the two leaders in the room in which they met, so no one was there to report their conversation.
“As much as possible, the former president wishes to remain outside the spotlight so as not to distract the new administration.
“He chose to go home in Daura hoping to find the type of quiet he wished for himself but realising that this was not the case, visitors trooping in morning, day and night, he moved out to a more distant place,” he added.
Recall that Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), recently detained former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele and ex-EFCC chairman Abdurasheed Bawa.
Similarly, some insiders close to the president have revealed that more former administration appointees may be jailed in the coming days.
