President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent his congratulations to the government and people of Liberia for the successful Liberian Presidential Election.
The statement was made by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, on Saturday.
President Tinubu also congratulated President-elect Joseph Boakai, who received the people’s mandate, and urged him to bring the country together and utilize the widespread support shown through the voting process to provide effective governance for the people of Liberia.
President Tinubu praises President George Weah for showing exceptional leadership by accepting defeat in the election and preventing any potential social and political turmoil.
President Tinubu admires President Weah’s remarkable display of democratic sportsmanship, especially in a time when democracy in West Africa is being threatened by malicious individuals who aim to undermine the people’s choice.
“I commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship. He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa. He has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected,” the President stated.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the people of Liberia for peacefully exercising their rights and urged them to remain committed to peace and democracy.
It is worth noting that Liberian President and African football legend George Weah had previously accepted his defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai.
The announced results showed that the opposition leader was in the lead with almost 51% of the votes in Liberia. During the announcement of the results by the country’s election umpire, however, Weah stated that he could not surpass Boakai’s lead.
“The result announced tonight, though not final, indicates that…Boakai is in a lead that we cannot surpass,” Weah said.
“This is the time for graciousness in defeat,” he added.
The Liberian president highlighted in his speech that even though he did not win the presidential poll, the people of Liberia emerged as the true winners.
