Musicians often use their music to express themselves and depict the situations they are going through, and Nigerian singer Charles Chibuezechukwu, popularly known as Crayon, is no exception.
Crayon stated that his debut album, ‘Trench To Triumph,’ serves as a sonic portrayal of his personal experiences. He explained that the album narrates his journey from living in the ghetto with his family in a cramped “face-me-I-face-you” apartment, where nine of them resided, to his signing with Mavin Records.
The ‘Ngozi’ singer shared that his mother sold fruits in a kiosk at Iyana-Iba for 19 years. In a recent interview with Glitch Africa, Crayon expressed, “The ‘Trench To Triumph’ album is my story. It encapsulates my reality and substance. It encompasses everything that has shaped me today—from my humble beginnings in Orile, residing in a crowded apartment with nine people, to the moment I got signed. Opening your door meant witnessing people in conflict.”
He continued, “My mum dedicated 19 straight years to selling fruits at Iyana-Iba. ‘Trench To Triumph’ is not just an album; it’s my journey, my substance, my reality—everything to me. Now, I find myself in a triumphant era, content with life, and everything is amazing.”
