Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to lead a delegation from the Federal Government to the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, AFCON.
The Super Eagles will be facing off against the host country, Côte d’Ivoire, in a quest for continental glory.
According to a statement released on Saturday by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Shettima previously represented President Bola Tinubu during the semi-finals, where Nigeria emerged victorious over South Africa.
“Recognising the unifying power of football and the immense role the Super Eagles play in fostering national pride and unity, the President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, believes that Vice President Shettima’s presence at the finals alongside the delegation is a testament to the government’s unwavering support for the team and its dedication to their success.
“The Federal Government calls on all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to unite in support of the Super Eagles, and to raise their voices in encouragement, and create a wave of national pride that propels the team to glory,” the statement noted.
The Nigerian Super Eagles emerged victorious over South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, winning 4-2 in a penalty shootout to secure their place in the AFCON final. Nigeria will now vie for the opportunity to claim their fourth AFCON trophy, a feat they last accomplished in 2013.
