Seychelles has declared a state of emergency following a major explosion and floods in an industrial zone on the main island of Mahé.

Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan has directed that all residents, with the exception of critical personnel, remain at home.

Several people have been hurt.

The explosion occurred at a construction and quarrying firm where explosives were being kept, creating a path of destruction throughout Providence’s industrial zone.

Despite being only 4km (2.5 miles) away, the international airport was also destroyed. Schools are closed, and the only mobility permitted is between the tourist islands.
