Rwandan police have apprehended a 34-year-old suspected serial murderer who is accused of murdering and burying over ten victims in his kitchen.
The authorities discovered the murders after evicting the man from his leased property in Kicukiro district, a suburb of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.
His landlord had instructed them to do so because he had not paid his rent for the previous seven months.
According to a police official who spoke to Rwanda’s private daily The New Times, when they attempted to evict him on Monday, he put up a struggle.
“He apologised and cried excessively, which raised our suspicions. We detained him and I personally took him to the police. It is at the police station where he confessed to having killed some people, prompting RIB [Rwanda Investigation Bureau] to investigate his residence,” the official said.
According to police, the man admitted to luring his victims from bars before stealing, killing, and burying them in a hole he dug up in his kitchen. He also admitted to dissolving some victims in acid.
According to Thierry Murangira, spokesperson for the Rwanda Investigation Bureau, the victims were both male and female.
He told AFP that sex workers had been primarily targeted.
Authorities stated that the man was arrested in July for allegedly robbing, raping, and threatening several women, but he was freed due to a lack of proof.
An unidentified police source told AFP that 14 bodies had been retrieved, but Mr Murangira said the overall number of fatalities was still being investigated.v
