Rigobert Song has resigned from his position as head coach of Cameroon, according to the president of the Cameroonian football federation (Fecafoot), Samuel Eto’o, announced on Wednesday.
In January, Cameroon was eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations in the last 16 by Nigeria, who went on to become the runners-up.
“We have not achieved our objectives, and our executive committee and I do not see ourselves renewing the contract (with Song),” Eto’o told France 24.
Song, who used to play on the international team with Eto’o, was named as the Cameroon coach in February 2022.
He guided the Indomitable Lions to a thrilling play-off win against Algeria in extra time to secure a spot in the Qatar World Cup.
However, despite a surprising victory over Brazil in their last match, Cameroon, who have won the African championship five times, were eliminated in the group stage.
Song made a significant contribution to this team,” Eto’o added. “Now we need to focus on the future.”
The former Liverpool midfielder Song only managed to win six out of his 23 matches as coach.
