Luis Enrique has been named as Paris Saint-Germain’s next head coach, with the former Barcelona manager signing a two-year contract at Parc des Princes.

PSG ultimately struck a contract termination deal with Christophe Galtier at the start of the week, before officially dismissing him, and Luis Enrique was already lined up to fill his shoes.

The Spaniard had been unemployed since being fired by Spain following their shock round-of-16 elimination to Morocco in the 2022 World Cup. He still has an impressive resume at the top level, and PSG have decided he is the perfect man to lead the club forward.

Galtier paid the price for PSG’s dismal 2022-23 season, which saw them limp to an unimpressive Ligue 1 title defense and lose the Champions League in the first round for the fourth time in the last six years. Luis Enrique, who has been hired till the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, will be expected to transform the Parisians into genuine contenders for European football’s most important trophy.

Luis Enrique previously won the Champions League with Barcelona, which he led to a historic triple in his first season at Camp Nou in 2014-15. During his time in Catalonia, he won nine titles in all, however he stepped down in the summer of 2017.

The following year, Spain called, and he was on the bench for 44 matches for the national team, recording 24 victories, 11 draws, and nine losses. Under his leadership, La Roja reached the Euro 2024 semi-finals but fell short on the global stage in Qatar last year.

Luis Enrique will now begin to make his impact on the PSG group. He will not be able to work with two of his former teammates, Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos, who both left the club at the end of June. Kylian Mbappe has been linked with a move due to a contract disagreement, but Luis Enrique will be determined to keep the Frenchman for the 2023-24 season.
