Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State is calling on the Federal Government to regulate content on social media platforms in Nigeria in order to combat the spread of misinformation.
He made this statement on Thursday while being honored as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Niger State Council.
Governor Bago believes that regulating social media will help decrease the circulation of fake news in the country and encourage unbiased reporting by traditional journalists.
He emphasized the importance of journalism in the progress of society, highlighting the role journalists play in shaping democracy in Nigeria through their reporting.
“As the fourth estate of the realm, journalists should carry out their duties as watchdogs of the society and ensure the objectivity in their reports,” Bago said.
“I call for the introduction of censorship on social media contents to checkmate the spread of fake news and hate speeches.”
The governor expressed his gratitude to the NUJ for giving him the award, stating that it has motivated him to work even harder.
He assured that his administration will continue to strive for progress in Niger State.
The NUJ National President, Chris Isiguzo, presented the governor with a certificate and praised his exceptional leadership qualities.
Isiguzo mentioned that the Governor was honored for his efforts in improving infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, governance, and education.
It is worth noting that Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, recently advocated for social media regulation.
