The National Judicial Council (NJC) has denied the reports circulating on social media that it received a list of nominees for Supreme Court vacancies from the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC).
According to the reports, the FJSC had provided the NJC with a list of 22 names to consider for filling the vacant positions in the apex court.
The reports emerged after concerns were raised in September about the Supreme Court functioning with only 10 out of its mandated 21 justices.
According to reports, the FJSC has submitted a shortlist to fill the vacant positions left by retiring and deceased justices.
However, the Director of Information of NJC, Soji Oye, stated on Sunday that he has not had any discussions about the list of nominees from the FJSC.
He dismissed the social media reports as the work of troublemakers and emphasized that official statements on such matters are always released by the council through his office.
Oye cautioned against the spread of unverified reports on social media about the nominations for the apex court and the process of filling vacancies on the bench. He emphasized that the media, particularly social media operators, should ensure they obtain information from reliable sources to avoid misleading the public.
