The Nigerian Army has apprehended a soldier who went viral on social media for complaining about his monthly salary of N50,000.
The soldier, who is stationed in Maiduguri, Borno State, had complained that the cost of transportation prevented him from seeing his family.
He bemoaned his year in the Borno forest, where he was allowed to see his family but was unable to do so due to his N50,000 wage.
According to the soldier , he was informed at the motor park that the transit price to his town was N35,000. This meant that the total cost of the journey would be N70,000 for him to and from.
Sahara Reporters, however, reported that the soldier has been detained in the “guardroom.”
The aforementioned outlet was informed by many sources that army leadership thought the video was humiliating.
“Our colleague who complained about the transport fare more than his salary has been locked up in the guardroom,” one of the sources said.
According to General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), troops and military commanders get monthly pay of less than N50,000, while generals and soldiers serving in operations are provided only N1,200 per day for food.
This was revealed by the CDS in an interview, where he claimed that since Nigerian military personnel and troops were performing well, their pay should reflect the value of their work and should motivate them to perform better.
