The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, to halt their planned strike for the benefit of the country.

Mr. Pedro Obi, the President of NANS, made this plea during a press conference in Abeokuta on Saturday.

Allub Times reports that the NLC and TUC issued a 14-day notice for a nationwide strike on February 8 due to the government’s failure to implement the agreements made on October 2 regarding the removal of fuel subsidy.

Obi observed that the organization empathizes with the difficulties that Nigerians, especially the youth and student community, are currently facing.

The President of NANS expressed the association’s strong conviction that if the planned strike were to take place, it would exacerbate the economic crisis in the country.

He further emphasized that while labor unions have the right to make demands and go on strike to convey their message, he appealed for a reconsideration of this decision.

He urged them to carefully consider the potential consequences on security, the economy, and, most importantly, the academic progress of students nationwide.

“While recognising the importance of addressing labour-related concerns and advocating for workers’ rights, we kindly urge the labour unions to explore alternative means of dialogue and negotiation with the relevant authorities.

“A strike, though a powerful tool, can lead to civil unrest and further worsen the security and economic situation of the country,” he said.

He therefore emphasized the importance of the Federal Government’s commitment to swiftly execute the implementation of the updated minimum wage. He believes that this action will significantly alleviate the challenges faced by the populace.
