Maurizio Sarri has stepped down as manager of Lazio after they were eliminated from the Champions League last 16 by Bayern Munich last week.

The Italian coach told the Serie A club on Tuesday that he would not continue as head coach, according to Fabrizio Romano.

He resigned immediately after the Eagles lost their one-goal lead in the first leg and were knocked out of the Champions League round of 16.

Harry Kane, the England captain, led Bayern Munich to a 3-0 victory on the night and a 3-1 win on aggregate.

Sarri took over as Lazio’s manager in June 2021, after coaching Chelsea and Juventus for a season each and taking a short break after leaving Juventus.

He spent almost the same amount of time at Lazio as he did at Napoli, where he gained recognition between 2015 and 2018.

Despite not winning any trophies during his time with Lazio, Sarri achieved several impressive derby wins and secured Champions League qualification for the team.

Despite showing promise early in his time at Lazio, recent months have not been kind to the team. They have lost four matches in a row in all competitions and have only won three out of 11 matches since mid-January.

Lazio is currently in 9th place in Serie A and has been eliminated from Europe, but they are still in the Coppa Italia, where they will face Juventus in the semi-finals.

Despite their struggles, the fact that Lazio still has a chance at winning a trophy makes the decision by their coach, Sarris, to leave surprising.

It is uncertain whether he will take a break from coaching or join the growing list of available managers in the summer. There is speculation that Chelsea, his former club, may be looking for a new manager if they part ways with Mauricio Pochettino.
