Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen were the standout players for Nigeria as they advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Cameroon 2-0.
Nigeria asserted their dominance from the beginning of the game and came close to scoring in the ninth minute, but Semi Ajayi’s goal was disallowed after a VAR check deemed it offside.
Victor Osimhen then played a crucial role in breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute, stealing the ball from Oumar Gonzalez and setting up a pass for Ademola Lookman.
Lookman’s shot was initially saved by Fabrice Ondoa, but the ball slipped through his arms and into the net. In the 90th minute, Lookman completed his brace and secured Nigeria’s victory.
From a short free-kick, Lookman made a solo run and passed the ball to a teammate, who then sent it to Calvin Bassey. Bassey delivered a low cross for Lookman, who calmly scored the second goal.
Osimhen was the one who did all the hard work for the first goal, but it was Lookman who stole the show by scoring two goals. He easily finished the first goal and then scored a brilliant solo goal for the second, which ultimately determined the outcome of the game.
Oumar Gonzalez made a glaring mistake when he received a simple throw-in and failed to stop Osimhen’s run. This mistake ended up costing his team dearly, as Cameroon was eliminated from the competition in the round of 16.
Rigobert Song’s team is now heading back home after being eliminated in the round of 16. On the other hand, Osimhen and his teammates will face Angola on February 2 in the quarter-final clash.
