The Lagos State Government has announced that the Third Mainland Bridge will be completely closed for 24 hours. This closure is necessary to allow the contractor to carry out a major part of the ongoing repair work on the bridge.

The Federal Government had recently resumed repair work on the Iyana Oworonshoki to Lagos end of the bridge, and had already completed repairs on the other side of the bridge.

The closure was announced in a statement by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on Monday, February 26, 2024.

Osiyemi announced that both sides of the carriageways will be closed from noon on Wednesday, February 28, to noon on Thursday, February 29, 2024.

The commissioner recommended that all road users take alternative routes that have been provided during this time, as the bridge will not be accessible for 24 hours.

Osiyemi also reassured road users that traffic management officials will be present to handle traffic and reduce any inconveniences.

Background

Repair work has been ongoing on the bridge since January, causing partial closures for both inbound and outbound traffic.

In January 2024, the federal government closed the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele section of the Third Mainland Bridge to effectively rehabilitate the entire section.

The Third Mainland Bridge is reported to be Africa’s second-largest bridge, stretching nearly 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) to connect Lagos Island, the city’s business hub, with the mainland, where most residents live.

The bridge was completed in 1991, during the administration of former Military Head of States Ibrahim Babangida.
