Gabon’s military officials have stated that former President Ali Bongo’s house detention has been lifted, stating that he is now “free to move around.”
In a statement delivered on state television on Wednesday evening, military spokesperson Col Ulrich Manfoumbi stated that the decision to release Mr Bongo was made owing to “his state of health.”
“He may, if he wishes, travel abroad for medical check-ups,” he added.
After staging a coup on August 30, the military placed the previous president under house arrest and declared control of the oil-rich country.
The decision to release him was made in response to pressure from the Central African regional bloc, Eccas and Gabon’s neighbors to respect the bodily integrity of the deposed president.
Mr Bongo had a stroke in 2018.
Many people were concerned about his health in the run-up to the 2023 presidential election.
