Trending Nollywood movie “A Tribe Called Judah” is set to make its international debut in the United Kingdom this Christmas, as announced by co-director Adeoluwa Owu, also known as Captain Degzy, on Instagram.
Following its initial release in Nigerian cinemas on December 15, 2023, the feature film is scheduled to be distributed across UK cinemas by Independent Film Exhibition Consultancy (IFEC) starting on December 29, 2023.
Notably, “A Tribe Called Judah” has achieved significant success in the Nigerian market, becoming the first Nollywood film to gross ₦113 million in its opening weekend and accumulating a total gross of over ₦122.7 million. Recent records from the Cinemas Exhibitors Association of Nigeria highlight it as the highest-grossing movie for 2023, joining other successful films like “Orisa,” “Merry Men,” “Kesari,” and “Something Like Gold” at the top of the Nigerian box office rankings.
However, the international release poses challenges for profitability, as the profit-sharing arrangement between cinema operators and filmmakers in the UK may cut into revenues, with British cinemas potentially taking up to 70% of ticket sales.
The holiday drama, featuring Jide Kene Achufusi, Timini Egbuson, Uzee Usman, Tobi Makinde, and Olumide Oworu as the Judah brothers, revolves around a plot where the siblings must unite to carry out a heist to save their mother, played by Akindele as Jedidah Judah. The film, directed by Barny Emordu, boasts a stellar cast that includes Ebelle Okaro, Uzor Arukwe, Nse Ikpe Etim, Genoveva Umeh, Faithia Williams, Nosa Rex, Greg Ojefua, Ibrahim Yekini, Boma Akpore, Paschaline Ijeoma Alex, Etinosa Idemudia, Juliana Olayode, and Yvonne Jegede.
