Musa Ibrahim, head of the Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration, has urged Nigerians to embrace bicycle use in order to reduce road accidents.

Giving this advice to residents on Thursday, July 27, during a stakeholders’ sensitization meeting in Abuja, Ibrahim stated that it is also to emphasize the need for cycling in Nigeria.

He added that the meeting coincides with World Bicycle Day, which is observed yearly on June 3 as a result of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decision.

Ibrahim noted that World Bicycle Day recognises “The uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental stewardship and health” hence the United Nations 2023 World Bicycle Day theme: ‘Riding Together for a Sustainable Future.’

He went on to say that proponents of bicycles have also advocated their usage to alleviate poverty, promote sustainable development, increase education, including physical education, for children and young people, promote health, prevent disease, and facilitate social participation.
