Roma icon Francesco Totti has praised manager Jose Mourinho as a “great man,” but has not ruled out a future bid for his position.
The Roma veteran, who played his whole career at the Stadio Olimpico, praised Mourinho following the club’s journey to the Europa League final and sixth-place finish in Serie A.
He has been linked with a move away from Roma this summer, with both Paris Saint-Germain and Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli reportedly interested, but he now appears to be staying.
Totti said exclusively to GOAL when asked what he thinks of Mourinho: “Great coach, great man, he did a lot. Let’s hope he can continue like this.”
Totti was also pressed about the prospect of becoming Roma’s manager in the future and replied: “I don’t know anything. Would I like it? Who wouldn’t like to stay at Roma?”
Mourinho has been dubbed a “great man,” yet he has been engaged in a slew of scandals this season. UEFA has banned him for statements he made about referee Anthony Taylor after the final as he waited for him in the parking lot, calling him a “disgrace.”
Mourinho also donned a microphone during one Serie A game, claiming that match official Daniele Chiffi was the worst he had ever seen on a football field.
Roma will now prepare for the 2023/24 season, beginning with a match against Mourinho’s former team, Tottenham Hotspur. Mourinho’s contract at the Stadio Olimpico is set to expire at the end of the current season.
