Nigerian music star, Erhiga Agarivbie, widely known as Erigga, expressed his discontent with the fact that, despite leaving home at the tender age of eight and forging his own path to success, his father now asserts a claim to his wealth.
In a candid conversation on the Spill With Phyna podcast, the Warri-born rapper revealed that his father played no role in his upbringing. However, once Erigga achieved success, his father began reaching out, making demands on his newfound prosperity.
Erigga, in reflecting on the situation, critiqued the entitlement mentality prevalent among parents, stating, “When you see parents start feeling entitled, it doesn’t make sense because you had many years ahead of me; why didn’t you make it before me? People don’t really address this entitlement mentality in Africa.”
Recalling his challenging journey, Erigga recounted facing the harsh realities of the street alone, engaging in activities he couldn’t disclose publicly. He contemplated the potential consequences, considering that many of the people he associated with during that time are either deceased or incarcerated.
Despite these adversities, Erigga found solace and purpose in his early love for music, which guided him towards his aspirations. However, with his subsequent success, relatives, including his father and stepbrothers, approached him with requests for forgiveness and entitlement claims. Erigga, standing firm, emphasised that he had self-risen from a young age and couldn’t attribute his success to those who were absent during his formative years.
