The Edo House of Assembly has initiated the process of impeaching the Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

The majority leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, announced the impeachment notice during the session. She mentioned that the petition, dated March 5, was signed by 21 out of the 24 members against the deputy governor.

Aiguobarueghian explained that “the petition against the deputy governor came in on March 5 and was signed by 21 out of the 24 members. The number of members who signed the petition was more than the two-third requirement stipulated in the constitution.”

She also mentioned that the petition was based on two reasons: perjury and disclosing government secrets.

The Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, acknowledged receiving the petition and instructed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to deliver the impeachment notice to Shaibu.

Agbebaku also granted the deputy governor seven days to respond to the impeachment notice.

This impeachment notice is the most recent development in the ongoing conflict between the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his Deputy. The two have been in disagreement since last year when Shaibu declared his intention to run for the position of governor.
