Ian Maatsen has extended his Chelsea contract through 2026 and will play the rest of the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
The Dutch junior international, 21, has signed with Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund. The left-back is on loan from Chelsea until the end of the current campaign. He finished the required medical examination in Dortmund on Wednesday.
“We have made the decision to make another move in the winter to fill the left-back position because of our existing personnel situation. Ian meets the profile of our criteria thanks to his strengths. He is a player with great speed, a powerful left foot, and versatility on the field.”
Sebastian Kehl, the sporting director of BVB, said, “We are really happy that we were able to realize this loan before our first Bundesliga game of the year.”
Borussia Dortmund tried hard to get me. “I am delighted that the loan has now been resolved. I have been a longtime supporter of BVB and its supporters, and I even attended the Champions League match in Manchester in the autumn of 2022 to witness the team in action,” Ian Maatsen states. I genuinely look forward to the Yellow Wall, and I swear I will do everything in my power to ensure the team’s victory.
After making 15 first-team appearances for the Blues this season, the 21-year-old will now continue to grow in the Bundesliga.
Maatsen joined Chelsea in 2015 from PSV Eindhoven and has previously embarked on loans at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley.
