The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has officially sworn in 11 new justices to the Supreme Court.

The ceremony, which records a significant increase in the number of judges on the nation’s highest court, included Justices Jummai Hannatu Sankey, Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa, Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme, Haruna Simon Tsammani, and Moore Aseimo A. Adumein, among others.

In his speech, Justice Ariwoola advised the newly appointed judges to avoid letting personal ambitions influence their decisions. He emphasized the need for them to cut ties with individuals of questionable character and rely on their conscience to guide them in their judicial responsibilities.

Additionally, the CJN prepared the new justices for the criticisms and challenges they will face as decision-makers in the highest court of the land.

He pointed out that litigants often have high and sometimes unrealistic expectations, which can result in verbal attacks against justices who rule against them.

The significant event highlights the judiciary’s dedication to maintaining justice and integrity in the Nigerian legal system.

As these new justices start their term, their input is expected to have a significant impact on shaping Nigeria’s legal landscape.

He said, “There is no way you can please human beings, especially litigants. The easiest way to fail in life is by trying to please everyone. The only deity you can fear is the Almighty God”, he said and added, “Once your judgement is in consonance with what God expects from you, and is also in accordance with the Constitution, you should consider yourself the happiest and freest person on earth.”

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) informed the new Justices that their promotion to the Supreme Court is a recognition of their intelligence and strong work ethic, which are key qualities of judicial excellence.

Justice Ariwoola mentioned that swearing in 11 new Justices at once is a first in the history of the Nigerian Supreme Court. He referred to his previous speech, where he expressed concern about the Court not having the full 21 Justices required by law for a long time, and he promised to change that.

He explained to the new Justices that they are joining the Supreme Court at a time when the number of Justices is at an all-time low of ten due to retirements and deaths.

He encouraged them to do their best, as they are experienced judicial officers transitioning from the Court of Appeal and are familiar with the responsibilities and duties of judges.

“Your moral uprightness, integrity and respect for the constitution and other extant laws in operation, must be unwavering and unassailable”, He encouraged the new Justices to view themselves as God’s representatives on earth, saying, “any judgement given at this level can only be upturned in heaven”.
