President Muhammadu Buhari apologized to the Nigerian people in an emotional goodbye letter for the pains and sufferings caused by some policies and programs enacted during his administration’s efforts to steer the country’s economy in the right path.
President Buhari acknowledged the difficult choices made in rebuilding the economy Tuesday morning, admitting that some of these measures had resulted in temporary pain.
The out-going president emphasized that these actions were made for the better welfare of the country.
While Nigerians had great expectations of his administration, President Buhari insisted that his goal was not to just meet these expectations on the surface.
Instead, he stayed devoted to addressing citizens’ real needs, citing thorough election system improvements as one major achievement in this area.
Addressing the nation, President Buhari stated, “Fellow Nigerians, propelled by your overwhelming support for me and my political party, I embarked on this journey with immense promise and expectation from you.
“My intention was never to be politically correct, but rather to do what is right and make a meaningful impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“These high expectations were justified because, like every ordinary Nigerian, I too grew weary of witnessing our country deviating from the path of righteousness.”
Buhari also stated that he would be leaving behind an electoral process that ensured legitimate and transparent outcomes, reduced the role of money in politics, and allowed Nigerians to vote for their choice politicians
He commended the ongoing conclusion of this procedure, which created a level playing field for candidates who did not have political godfathers or large resources.
Buhari attributed the enhanced resilience of the Nigerian economy to strategic measures put in place to successfully navigate global economic downturns.
In addition, the outgoing president praised Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, characterizing him as a capable leader who had fought relentlessly to achieve his position.
He congratulated Tinubu on realizing his aspiration and expressed faith in his abilities to lead the country to new heights.
Buhari stated, “You have indeed toiled for this day, and God has rewarded your efforts. I have no doubt that your passion for excellence, reliance on competence, fairness in relationships, commitment to equity, loyalty to the country, and desire for Nigeria to attain global relevance will guide you as you take our country to even greater heights than I left it.”
President Buhari expressed heartfelt thankfulness to God, admiration for the Nigerian people, and a modest sense of accomplishment in reflecting over his tenure.
He admitted that the 2023 presidential race would be the most hotly contested in the country’s history and urged anyone who felt wronged to seek redress through the legal system, while also emphasizing the significance of accepting court rulings.
As Nigeria works to deepen its democracy, President Buhari urged the country to build on the accomplishments made in the electoral process and collaborate for a better future.
He praised all presidential candidates and their political parties for putting their faith in the judicial system and seeking legal redress.
