President Bola Tinubu has been chosen as the African Union (AU) Champion for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Partnership.
The AU acknowledged President Tinubu’s significant efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and personnel capacity in Nigeria.
The appointment reflects his strong commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality in the country.
”His initiatives include pledging to train 120,000 frontline health workers within 16 months, demonstrating a visionary approach to strengthening the healthcare workforce.
”Additionally, he has committed to doubling the number of primary health facilities across communities and expanding health personnel enrollment capacity over the next three years,” it said.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has informed Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs about this appointment.
The recommendation was made by the Committee of Heads of State and Government of Africa CDC, which is led by President Azali Assoumani of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union.
President Tinubu, in his role as the AU Champion for Human Resources for Health, has been invited to speak at the Ministerial Executive Leadership Programme (MELP). The theme of the programme is ‘Impactful Leadership in Health: A Whole Government Approach.’
The event will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Africa CDC Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This coincides with the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government.
