The Abia State Ministry of Environment has prohibited the use of Styrofoam foils, commonly referred to as ‘Take Away’.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, the ministry announced that the use of these foils as food containers is now banned in the state. Ogbonna also mentioned that Take Away had already been banned in other states, such as Lagos.

The public is advised to stop using these foils immediately until a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the potential health risks associated with the product.

During the January 2024 clean-up exercise in Umuahia, several defaulters were arrested and punished.

The defaulters were caught trading or loitering in different areas of the state capital, which goes against the government’s previous orders.

On the other hand, the clean-up effort was largely successful, as many residents cleaned their gutters, and the State government provided trucks to remove the waste that was generated.
