The Abia State House of Assembly has approved a bill to end the payment of pensions to former governors and their deputies in the state.

It is entitled, “A Bill (H.A.B 11:) for a Law to Revoke The Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001 and for other Matters connected therewith.”

It was introduced by Uchanna Okoro, the Majority Leader and member representing Arochukwu State Constituency.

The Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, announced the bill’s approval after it went through the first, second, committee consideration, and third readings during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Emeruwa, in congratulating members, stated that the bill would help reduce the state’s governance expenses and channel resources towards development.

He mentioned that once governor Alex Otti approves the bill, it will be known as the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024.”
