The Federal Government called an emergency meeting with the heads of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Friday.
The Federal Government called the meeting to avoid a general walkout on October 3.
The unions had declared an indefinite strike in response to the government’s inability to provide palliatives to mitigate the impact of the elimination of the gasoline subsidy.
The NLC and TUC are asking for salary increases, palliative care, tax breaks and allowances for public sector workers, and a reassessment of the minimum wage, among other things.
The discussion is scheduled for later this evening at Aso Villa, Conference Room of the President’s Office of Chief of Staff.
According to Vanguard, the Federal Government had scheduled the meeting for 12 noon today, but moved it to the evening to allow organized labor to reach out to their leaders outside Abuja.
According to reports, the NLC and its TUC counterpart received the invitation from the government this morning via the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
