Prominent opposition figures Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are reportedly putting together an alliance to unseat the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC).

Visitodell leant that the three are considering forming an alliance in order to offer a formidable front against the APC.

It is also understood that the scope of their agreement to collaborate is still in its early stages, is being planned in stages, and is also contingent on the outcome of the 2023 presidential election tribunal, in which President Bola Tinubu’s victory is being disputed.

According to ThisDay, the debate among prominent politicians began with one between Atiku and Kwankwaso.

After the first leg of the discussions was deemed successful, another meeting between Obi and other key members of the PDP reportedly began to take shape after the other two stakeholders decided to bring him in.

According to individuals close to the discussions, there are two primary emphasis points.

First, the three politicians are said to be awaiting the conclusion of the presidential election petitions in court, which will determine the second leg of the decision, especially if the outcome does not favor them.

The leaders were said to be considering the possibility that the tribunal would order a re-election or rerun, in which case they would form a coalition for the election and face Tinubu and the APC again.

If the tribunal rules against them, the leaders are said to be considering forming a formidable party ahead of the 2027 general election, which would bring together not just the three of them, but also their political parties and supporters, to take over the reins of power from the APC.

A source quoted on the matter said, “The meeting started with Kwankwaso and Atiku and they have agreed to bring Peter Obi in to set up a formidable opposition after the court cases. Although they have not got to the point of discussing who will lead the opposition, they are leaving it out for now till after the court cases.

“After the court cases, they will plan and come together for a re-election or stand together ahead to fight the 2027 election battle. They are considering a formidable party comprising the PDP, Labour and NNPP.”
