Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has voiced grave concern about the forthcoming statewide protests called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

While respecting the constitutional right to peaceful protests, Egbetokun has urged all parties engaged to keep the demonstrations peaceful and avoid being hijacked by miscreants.

Recognizing the labor unions’ concerns, the IGP highlighted the significance of constructive conversation in resolving the difficulties.

In this regard, he has asked Commissioners of Police from various commands, as well as supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to work with the leadership of the NLC and TUC to identify common ground on the protests.

Dr. Egbetokun reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to guaranteeing the safety and security of residents during the protests in a statement issued on Tuesday.

He also stated that the Police Department will not accept any act of vandalism, gangsterism, or extortion that endangers public peace and order.

Given the possible security risks posed by the planned protests, the IGP has authorized a comprehensive security strategy for the entire country. He urged all officers to stay attentive, professional, and to adhere to the highest standards of conduct.

Furthermore, the IGP advised all parties, including the NLC, TUC, and civil society groups, to prioritize peaceful conversation as the most effective method of resolving issues.

He reminded them of the Police Department’s commitment to providing a safe atmosphere for free dialogue and constructive interaction.
