Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who was arrested on Friday and is scheduled to appear before a judge later on Monday, has declared a hunger strike.
He extended an invitation to all political captives to join him.
Mr Sonko stated on social media that he had resolved to resist in the face of so much hatred, falsehoods, abuse, and persecution.
He is now facing a slew of new allegations, including insurrection planning.
His lawyers claimed that the authorities had violated their client’s rights.
They also claimed that the fresh accusations filed against their client over the weekend overturned his June conviction in a case in which he was convicted in absentia.
This conviction triggered deadly rioting throughout Senegal.
