The House of Representatives has requested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) devise a procedure for removing dead voters from voter rolls.
This was the legislators’ resolution following a motion of urgent national concern by a member, Leke Abejide, drawing the House’s attention to what he regarded as irregularities witnessed during the 2023 general elections.
Abejide, who proposed the motion, stated that his late father’s name appeared in the INEC registration.
The MPs also requested the electoral commission to deregister any voter who fails to vote in two consecutive election cycles.
Previously, the House directed the National Assembly clerk to transmit to President Muhammadu Buhari the bill for constitutional amendment to provide for uniform retirement age for judicial officers and pension rights.
The House decision came after the bill was passed by the Sokoto State House of Assembly, fulfilling the requirements of Section 9(2) of the constitution for two-thirds approval of state assemblies.
The representatives also asked the Gombe, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kwara, Plateau, and Taraba State Houses of Assembly, which have yet to pass a resolution on the bill, to do so.
If the President signs the constitutional amendment, it will raise the retirement age of high court justices from 65 to 70 years.
