The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, was remanded to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission by the Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday.
This was after he pleaded not guilty to charges of alleged abuse of office and the allocation of $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion.
Emefiele, along with his co-defendant, Henry Isioma Omole, faced 26 fresh counts before Justice Rahman Oshodi.
The charge, dated April 3, 2024, was marked ID/23787c/2024.
Emefiele’s lawyer requested bail in self-recognizance and to continue with the bail granted by the Abuja court.
He also requested the court give the second defendant bail, which had been previously granted by Justice O – Sule-Hamzat.
The prosecution lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), did not object to the bail requests. However, Justice Oshodi decided to keep Emefiele in EFCC custody and the second defendant in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre after hearing from both sides.
The case was adjourned until April 11 for a decision on bail and the start of the trial.
