Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State has asked President Bola Tinubu to consider reopening the land borders to improve food security in the country.

He made this request during a meeting with the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, in Kano on Monday.

Kabir-Yusuf expressed concern about the tough economic situation facing Nigerians and believes that reopening the borders could help reduce inflation and lower the cost of food.

“We wish to appreciate the president’s intervention in the ongoing national food initiative.

“He considers Kano as the host for the initiative ahead of its planned launch believing that the programme will cushion the effects of food scarcity if implemented.

“Another immediate intervention that can make food available and affordable to our population is for the Federal Government to consider the reopening of the borders and allow free importation of commodities,” he said.

Kabir-Yusuf emphasized the importance of reopening the borders and praised the Customs’ food distribution program. He also urged for proactive measures to prevent the diversion of the food supplies.

The governor promised ongoing support to the Service to help them carry out their duties efficiently.
